Life Changing...

January 18, 2012. We found out that our dearest Mia has diabetes. We have been noticing the classic symptoms of diabetes and it was time for her check-up. When I called to make her appointment I requested that she be tested. The doctor tested for a whole host of things and needless to say that we are thankful that is was diabetes and not some of the other scary things!

She has been such a trooper! We went on the 20th to see an endocrinologist and then we went to visit the Humphrey's Diabetes Center. We spent 2 hours there with a nurse and a dietition learning how to test blood sugar, give insulin, calculate carbs to insulin ratios, and many other things that I am still trying to wrap my head around!

It is always interesting how even though in your heart you already know what the news will be, you are still so shocked to hear the Doctor say it. It has been a very tough few days and we are still trying to work through everything. There is so much to learn and know and it is beyond overwhelming! I am so glad that we are such a close family...we are helping eachother and we are so thankful for the help of our parents and aunt!

Mia is dealing really well with the new routine and it is so nice to see our Mia coming back more and more each day! She was so thin from her body burning off all of her fat stores, the doctor said that she was to the point where her body was starving. She gained 2 pounds over the weekend so we know that the insulin is doing it's job and we are looking forward to the rest of those 5 lost pounds re-appearing! I shall have to remember to remind her as a teenager when she is crying over a gained pound or two how excited she was when she saw 33.6 instead of 31.6 on the scale!

Thank heaven for modern medicine, insurance, and insulin! Now if only I can get all of this stuff figured out! Wish me luck!

Christmas 2011

We have had such a wonderful holiday season! We have been blessed to spend many hours with our family members and enjoying yummy food. WAY yoo much yummy food!

We had a fun Christmas morning. The kids were delighted by the presents that they recieved. "Pearl" was a hit for sure! We are lucky enough to live close to both sets of grandparents and were able to spend the day with them. Cutlers came over for breakfast after we had opened our presents. We had a lovely feast of eggs, sausage, bacon, hot chocolate or cider, and Grampa rolls.

It was lucky that we happened to have 1 pm church and so we had plenty of time to enjoy the morning and then enjoy a nice Sacrament meeting. There was such beautiful music to celebrate the birth of the Savior.

After some quiet time and napping it was off to the Johnsons for dinner, a missionary phone call and celebrating. We had prime rib...DELICIOUS! Kevin called just as we were sitting down for dinner. It was so fun to talk to him and hear about all of the things that he is experiencing in Indonesia. It was really fun to hear him talk to Ryan about how similar the living conditions are between their missions. Kevin is doing a really great job and is loving his mission!

So, there we have it. Another Christmas down. We are very thankful for our family and for the time that we had to spend with them. Ryan was able to be home for about 12 days...in a row! I got really used to having him around! It was so nice to have an extra set of kid wrangling hands and an adult here ALL day to talk to!
